LESS IS MORE

School portraits focus on the face and upper part of the body, so it is important to make sure that there are no unnecessary distractions. The attention should be on facial expressions, eye color, hair and all the details that make your child unique.

Choose comfortable tops and classic necklines. Don’t force your child into wearing something that they absolutely don’t like. A relaxed child is a happy child and it is all about making sure they are in a good mood on their picture day.

COLOR

Bright or neon colors can cause color casts on your child’s skin, so it’s better to stick to more neutral pallet. Deep jewel tones photograph especially well but think about the color of your child’s eyes, hair and skin tone and choose clothing that enhance their features. You can either try to match the colors to the eyes or hair or you can contrast it to make them pop. Your style preference and your child’s personality will help you make that decision.

AVOID LOGOS, TEXT AND ILLUSTRATIONS

They might be fun and cute for everyday wear but they are major distraction on the photos. Stick with solids if possible. We are going for classic and timeless look here. Instead, you can focus on textures. They add dimension and subtle detail. A soft woven knit sweater or a simple cotton shirt will not overpower the photo, nor distract from the face.

ACCESSORIES

Keep it minimal and simple. Again, you don’t want any distractions from your child’s beautiful face. Large bows or hats are not recommended. Delicate chain or earrings are ok, especially if they are meaningful. The portrait will be that much more special.

HAIR

The hair should be clean and tidy. Keep it off the face if possible so all your child’s features are clearly visible, especially the eyes.

Remember, the key for your kids to feel more relaxed and natural in front of the camera is being comfortable in the clothes they are wearing. Avoid overly complicated or restrictive clothing, choose flattering colors and fix up their hair so it’s neat and off their face.

If I will be photographing your kids this school season, I will do my best (as always) to bring out their genuine expressions and emotions and capture them in my camera.

I can’t wait to create these beautiful and timeless portraits for your family.
